INTRODUCTION
TSR Download is a memory resident, (Terminate-and-Stay-Resident),
soft font manager for the IBM PC. It locates your soft fonts
automatically, and translates them into English! The program will
download and/or select any HP compatible soft font. TSR Download
remembers what fonts are in your printer and how much memory they
take. The TSR Download program SHOULD be configured, (cus-
tomized), before it is used. If you want to use the program in
its memory resident mode you MUST load the program into memory
before using it. The program can be called up from within any ap-
plication by hitting a Hot-Key. TSR Download has a simple to use
"point and shoot" interface and always has a short help screen
available. The program can be removed from memory with a special
key combination, provided it is the last memory resident program
loaded. (TSR Download can also run from the command line.)
All commands in TSR Download are mnemonic. Thus, the <D> key
stands for Download, the <M> key for Memory, the <P> key for
Printer Control, etc. Basic commands include:
<F1> or <H> Help screen
<Esc> Exit Download
<Return> or
<Space> Mark font for later downloading
<D> Download all marked fonts
<I> Set the next soft font ID number
<L> Display fonts Loaded in your printer
<M> Memory requirements for downloaded & marked fonts
<O> Output to parallel, serial, or file
<P> Printer control menu
<S> Select the highlighted soft font
<C> Change the soft font subdirectory
<Alt> <U> Unload this program from memory
This shareware package contains two programs: DL.EXE, and
DLCFG.EXE. Additional utilities, FONTCAT.EXE and TYPEFACE.EXE
are available to registered users. The DL.EXE and DLCFG.EXE
programs are part of the TSR Download system, while the
FONTCAT.EXE program is a utility that produces catalogs of your
soft fonts. TYPEFACE.EXE lets you add proper typeface names to
third party soft fonts. In addition, an information file READ.ME,
a question and answer file, PROBLEM.TXT, and a site license file
SITELIC.DOC will be found on this disk. The READ.ME file will
contain information about any recent changes to the programs, and
the PROBLEM.TXT file contains answers to common problems.
Users are encouraged to register their version of TSR Download.
Registered users are entitled to a number of benefits including:
o A copy of the current version TSR Download (no opening share-
ware screen, supports 32/100/200 soft fonts)
o A configuration program that lets you alter the hot-key,
window color, window position, error noise, number of
directory reads, plus many other features
1
o Printed manual
o A copy of our Soft Font Manual (it tells you everything you
ever wanted to know about soft fonts.)
o A copy of our FONTCAT utility program
o A copy of the TYPEFACE utility program
o A set of Helv & Roman LaserJet soft fonts (8 - 30 points) for
only $30 additional
o A set of Helv & Roman DeskJet soft fonts (6 - 30 points) for
only $40 additional (30 pt is capitols and numbers only)
REQUIREMENTS
TSR Download requires an IBM PC, XT, AT or compatible computer
with PC-DOS or MS-DOS operating systems 2.1 through 4.1. TSR
Download occupies 38K of RAM when loaded into memory. An HP
LaserJet+, Series II, DeskJet, or compatible printer is required,
along with a parallel or serial printer port. Printer ports
LPT1:, LPT2:, LPT3:, COM1:, and COM2: are supported.
START UP
The TSR Download program can be used as either a memory resident
or a command line program. In either case you SHOULD configure
the program before running it.
Copy the DL.EXE and DLCFG.EXE files from the distribution disk to
your hard disk or another floppy disk. You may make a separate
subdirectory for them, store them in your MS-DOS command sub-
directory, or place them in the root directory. Once copied you
are ready to configure TSR Download. NEVER work with original TSR
Download distribution disk since the configuration program physi-
cally modifies the TSR Download program!
Please read through the rest of this manual. Then configure TSR
Download to suit your needs. Once loaded into memory TSR Download
is at your command.
CONFIGURING TSR DOWNLOAD
The DLCFG program configures the memory resident DL.EXE program
for your particular computer system. The configuration program
SHOULD be run before you use the TSR Download program! Remember
that the DLCFG program MODIFIES the DL.EXE program. To configure
the program make sure that both DL.EXE and DLCFG.EXE are in the
current subdirectory. (It doesn't matter where this is.) Then
type:
dlcfg path memory port_type port_number status
The configuration program will start and attempt to locate the
DL.EXE program. (If DL.EXE is not found the configuration program
2
will quit. Once found the DL.EXE program will be modified as per
the command line arguments.
PATH
Download always needs to be told where your soft fonts are
stored. You must specify the disk drive, subdirectory path,
and wild card to be used to locate your fonts. Move the cur-
sor to the "Disk Drive, Path, & Wild Card:" line and hit the
<Return> key. Now enter a valid drive, path, and wild card.
For example:
D:\fonts\*.usp
C:\*.*
D:\WS2\FONT\*.US?
Do not tell TSR Download that your soft fonts are lo-
cated in the current subdirectory by typing: *.*. You must
supply a disk drive, path, and wild card. The wild card pat-
tern can be very useful. If your soft fonts are mixed in
with other files you can locate them through the use of this
wild card. For example, the wild card pattern "*.US?" will
find all files with the extension ".USP" or ".USL". If your
fonts are located in their own special subdirectory you can
use the "*.*" wild card to locate all files in that sub-
directory.
MEMORY
Printer Memory. Since the TSR Download program knows how
much memory each font will use in your printer, the program
can be set up to warn you when you try and download more
fonts than your printer will hold. Just enter the number of
Kbytes of RAM memory your printer has. A DeskJet has either
128 or 256 Kbytes of memory. A LaserJet typically comes with
512 kbytes. If you have additional memory it usually is
added in 1 megabyte sections. So if you have 1 megabyte of
additional memory you have 1560 Kbytes, (remember the 512K
you started with), or with 2 megabytes you have 2608 Kbytes.
To set a new memory limit, move the cursor to the "Printer
Memory:" line and hit the <Return> key. Now enter your
printer RAM memory from 0 - 6000 followed by the <Return>
key. You can disable this memory limits check by entering 0.
PORT_TYPE
Download will work with parallel or serial printer ports. If
you have a choice you should use a parallel printer port.
Parallel communication is MUCH faster than serial. (It takes
about 16 seconds to send 100K bytes of fonts to a LaserJet
from an IBM AT.) Answer with a <P> for parallel printer
ports or an <S> for serial printer ports, followed by a
<Return> key.
NOTE that if you chose serial communication you must ini-
tialize the communications port yourself. TSR Download will
not do this for you! You can use the DOS mode command to set
3
the serial communication rate. For example, to set 9600 baud
on communications port 1 type:
mode COM1:9600,N,8,1,P <Return>
PORT_NUMBER
This option lets you specify the printer port number that is
connected to your laser or DeskJet printer. You can specify
a parallel printer port number from 1 to 3, or a serial
printer port number from 1 to 2. Only numbers will be ac-
cepted. If the number you enter is incorrect the screen will
remain in edit mode. Hit the <Return> key when the printer
port is correct.
STATUS
The TSR Download program always checks the status of the
parallel printer port before sending any data. This normally
works quite well. However, if you have a networked, non-
standard, or a very fast computer you may experience
problems. The TSR Download program might think your printer
port is busy when it is actually free. If TSR Download tells
you your printer port is busy when you know it is not, you
can use this option to tell the program to ignore printer
status. So, if you have printer problems try changing the
<N> to a <Y> followed by a <Return> key.
Please note that registered users receive a different configura-
tion program along with the current version of TSR Download.
That configuration program runs interactively and gives you
greater control over the operation of TSR Download.
LOADING TSR DOWNLOAD
TSR Download works as either a memory resident or a command line
program. The program can be passed one or two optional arguments
when it is run. These arguments control command line operation
and list file control. The general form of a TSR Download command
is:
dl [listfile] [-c/b]
Where "listfile" is the name of a disk file that contains a list
of font files to send to your printer, and "-c" or "-b" tells the
program to run from the command line. The position of these op-
tions in the command line does not matter.
Fonts specified by a list file are always sent to the printer
before anything else is done. Any time that a "-c" option is
present as an argument the TSR Download program will run from the
command line, but will still pop up after downloading the list of
fonts. If you just want to send a list of font and do NOTHING
else use the "-b" (batch file) option. Note that when the "-c" or
"-b" option is present the program is not loaded into memory!
4
To use TSR Download from the command line type:
dl -c
The TSR Download window will appear immediately and the program
will search for your soft fonts. All aspects of program operation
are the same whether you are running from the command line or as
a memory resident program. The only thing that changes is how the
program is activated.
To download a list of soft fonts use the "-b" option and type:
dl listfile -b
TSR Download will simply find the list file and then send each
soft font mentioned in it to your printer. TSR Download will
return back to the command line when finished, unlike the opera-
tion of the "-c" option.
To use the memory resident version of the program you must load
it into memory first. The simplest way to load TSR Download in
this fashion is to type the program name. For example:
dl
Your PC screen will display one of three different messages at
this point. If the program was successfully loaded into memory
you will see a brief message describing the configuration of TSR
Download:
Download is now loaded into memory.
Use Ctrl-Alt-D to activate.
Printer port 1, read directory once, warnings enabled, 32 fonts.
Once activated Download can be removed by hitting Alt-U.
If you try and install TSR Download again after it was previously
loaded into memory, your PC will beep and the following error
message will appear:
Download is already loaded into memory.
If, when you install TSR Download, you have too little free
memory, or another TSR program conflicts with Download you will
get a different error message. If this occurs, please call us and
indicate what the error code was.
Download can not be loaded, error code ##.
When TSR Download is first loaded into memory you can optionally
send a list of fonts to your printer. This is a handy way to ini-
tialize your printer with the fonts you normally use. For in-
stance, you could put the command to install the program in your
autoexec.bat file and have TSR Download send your favorite soft
fonts to your printer, as it was loaded into memory.
5
To send a list of soft fonts you must first create a disk file
that contains the name of each soft font you wish to download.
Note that the TSR Download program can automatically create this
soft font list for you, or you can create it with any ASCII text
editor. (For more information on how TSR Download can create
this list file see the section on font lists.)
These soft font list files may be stored anywhere on your com-
puter. If you place these list files in the same subdirectory
that your soft fonts are located in, Download will save you the
trouble of typing in the disk drive and path name for that file.
Thus, the general rule for soft font names and for list files is:
if a disk drive and a path name are present in the list file name
or the soft font name, that drive and path will be used. If no
disk drive and path is specified, the list file and the soft
fonts are assumed to be in your soft font subdirectory!
How does this work in practice? Assume you have a soft font list
file, called ROMAN.LST, stored in your soft font subdirectory.
(Remember that you must configure TSR Download using the
DLCFG.EXE program and define the subdirectory where your soft
fonts will be stored.) To send this list of fonts to your printer
as Download is first loaded into memory type:
dl roman.lst
or
dl roman -c
or
dl roman -b
Since no disk drive and path was specified for the font list file
(roman.lst) TSR Download assumes that this file is found in your
soft font subdirectory. If no file name extension is given .lst
is assumed. Suppose you don't keep your soft font list file in
the soft font subdirectory? In that case type:
dl c:\softfonts\roman.lst
In either case TSR Download will tell you what fonts it is send-
ing to your printer. Printer status is also checked before each
soft font is sent. (If your printer is off, not selected, or out
of paper, you will have the option to fix the problem and then
send the font, or stop the downloading sequence.) Note that when
TSR Download sends a list of fonts this way it remembers what
fonts are resident in your printer. The <M> command can be used
to display a list of these fonts.
Now that you understand how to send a list of fonts to your
printer we should explain what a soft font list file looks like.
Remember you can create these list files with any ASCII text
editor, (EDLIN is an ASCII text editor), or you can have Download
make them.
In a soft font list file the name of each font appears on a
6
separate line. An optional disk drive and path may be placed
before the font name. For example, if you have a set of six
Times-Roman fonts in your soft font subdirectory the list file
would appear as follows:
TR100RPN.USP
TR100BPN.USP
TR100IPN.USP
TR120RPN.USP
TR120BPN.USP
TR120IPN.USP
RUNNING TSR DOWNLOAD
The TSR Download program is activated by holding the <Ctrl> and
<Alt> keys down while simultaneously pressing the <D> key. (Or
use the key combination you selected with the configuration
program.) A small window will appear in the center of your screen
with a list of soft fonts. (See below.) NOTE that version 1.9b
of TSR Download only supports 32 soft fonts at a time. The regis-
tered version comes in three separate sizes: 32, 100, & 200 soft
fonts. When more than 32 soft fonts are present, TSR Download
1.9b stops after locating the first 32 fonts.

The window will now show a list of soft font names, sorted in al-
phabetical order. At the bottom of this window a single line
gives an English language explanation of the current,
(highlighted), soft font. If you have more soft fonts than a
single window will hold, the remainder of the fonts will appear
on successive pages. Once activated, TSR Download responds to the
following single key commands:
<F1> or <H> Help screen
<Esc> Exit DOWNLOAD
<Return> or
<Space> Mark font for later downloading
<D> Download all marked fonts
<I> Set the next soft font ID number
<L> Display fonts Loaded in your printer
<M> Memory requirements for downloaded & marked fonts
<O> Output control
<P> Printer control menu
7
<S> Select the highlighted soft font
<C> Change the soft font subdirectory
<Alt> <U> Unload this program from memory
While in TSR Download, you can move through the font list by
using the cursor keys. The <Home> key takes you to the first font
on a page, and the <End> key to the last. The <PgUp> & <PgDn>
keys move between separate pages of fonts. The following section
explains each of the above mentioned commands in detail.
<F1> Help: A help menu is always available. It can be invoked
by hitting either the <F1>, or <H> key. This menu summarizes the
options available under Download. Use <PgUp> and <PgDn> to move
through the Help screens. Return to the main display by hitting
the <Esc> key. While you are in the help menu you can select any
option key shown on it, (C, D, I, L, M, O, P, S, or Alt-U), and
the program will automatically move to that feature.
<Return> Mark: To mark a font for downloading or for list file
creation you first move to the font by using the cursor keys. The
up and down arrow keys move up and down the list of fonts. The
left and right arrow keys move between columns in the list of
fonts. The <Home> key can be used to return to the first font on
a page. The <End> key moves to the last font on a page. The
<PgUp> and <PgDn> keys move between pages of fonts. (These two
keys only work if you have more than a full window, (32), of soft
fonts.)
To mark a font hit the <Return> or the <Space> key. The high-
lighted font will be marked (its color will change), and the cur-
sor will move down the list. If you accidentally mark a font you
don't want, move back to it and use the <Return> or <Space> key.
This will toggle the mark off. If you have enabled the printer
memory check feature in the configuration program, TSR Download
will check each time you mark a font to see if you have enough
memory left to store it. (This feature can be disabled by enter-
ing a value of 0 for printer memory.) When TSR Download detects
you have exceeded your printers memory storage ability it flashes
a brief message on the bottom of the window and makes a warbling
sound. Note that the font is still marked and will be downloaded
unless you un-mark it. You can use the <M> Memory option to
review how much memory your marked fonts will take before they
are downloaded.
<D> Download: To download all marked fonts, hit the <D> key.
Download will ask you whether you want to send your fonts now.
Answer with a <Y> for yes, or an <N> for no. If you answer yes,
TSR Download will check the printer status to make sure the
printer is on line and ready. (If the printer is not ready, an
error message will appear and you will have the option of fixing
the problem or returning to the Download main menu.) The fonts
will then be sent to the printer, and a status message will tell
you what font is currently being downloaded. Once a font is
downloaded to your printer it will appear in the list of fonts
that can be displayed with the <M> option.
8
<M> Memory Usage: You can view memory requirements for all
marked fonts and see a list of all soft fonts that have been pre-
viously sent to your printer with this option. Just hit the <M>
key. Marked font memory requirements will be shown on the bottom
line of the window. The rest of the window will show a list of
fonts now resident in your printer. While this list is displayed,
you may clear it by hitting the <W> Wipe key. Note that changing
the soft font subdirectory will clear this list. Use the <Esc>
key to return to the main font menu. See the sample screen below:

<L> Font Lists: TSR Download will send a list of fonts to your
printer or create a font list for you. To move to the font list
menu hit the <L> key. Your display will look as follows:
╒═══════════════ List File Control ═════════════════╕

╘═══════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
Use the up and down cursor keys to move to the function you want.
Then hit <Return> to select that function. In the screen shown
above this would select the "Send font list" function. TSR
Download would then prompt you for the name of the font list.
Enter a font name and extension followed by a <Return>. All fonts
in this list will be sent to your printer. If you make a mistake
just use the <Esc> key to cancel. Remember that the Printer Font
List will now contain those fonts.
Please note that the when asked for a list file name you may
specify a disk drive and path, or you may just enter the file
name and extension. If only the file name and extension of the
list file are given, that file is assumed to reside in your soft
font subdirectory. (Change the subdirectory with the <C> key.)
As a convenience for you any file name that does not have an ex-
tension is assumed to have the default extension for list files
".LST". Thus the file names test.lst and test are equivalent. To
enter a file name with no extension just add a period to the end
of the file name. Thus test. and test.lst are not equivalent.
Creating a font list from within TSR Download is easy. From the
9
main screen of TSR Download, mark the fonts you wish to put into
a list file, just as if you were going to send them to the
printer. Now enter the List File menu with the <L> key. Select
the "Create a font list and save" option. TSR Download will
prompt you for a file name for the new font list. Enter the new
name followed by a return. (Note the program will never overwrite
any existing file with the same name.) Once again, if you make a
mistake and don't wish to create a list of fonts use the <Esc>
key. Please note the warning above about disk drives and path
names. This method of creating a list file will only work with
soft fonts contained in a single subdirectory!
<I> Soft Font ID: The ID number to be assigned to the next soft
font can be changed using this key. Hit the <I> key and you will
be prompted for an ID number from 0 to 65,535. Enter your ID num-
ber followed by a <Return>. This number will be used for the next
soft font that is downloaded. Each successive soft font will
receive the next sequential number. (If you set the ID number to
5, and download 3 fonts, the first will get ID 5, the next ID 6,
and the last ID 7. If you download more fonts later, the next
soft font ID will be 8.)
<Esc> Exit Download: You can leave TSR Download from the main
menu by hitting the <Esc> key. This will return you to your ap-
plication.
<S> Select a Font: Any soft font resident in your printer can
be selected as the primary font. To do this, first move the cur-
sor to the font you want to select. Now hit the <S> key. TSR
Download will ask you if you want to select this soft font.
Answer with a <Y> or <N>.
<O> Output Control: You can redirect the output of Download to
a disk file, or change the serial or parallel printer port as-
signment with this option. To select this option hit the <O> key.
You will see a message "Parallel, Serial, or File (P/S/F):". To
select a new parallel or serial printer port hit either <P> or
<S> respectively. You will be asked for the port number. Respond
with a parallel port number 1 - 3 or a serial port number 1 - 2.
To redirect all TSR Download output to a disk file, chose the (F)
option. You will then be prompted for a disk file name. Please
use a disk drive, path, and file name! All further output will be
saved in this disk file. You can return to normal parallel or
serial operation by first selecting the <O> option and then by
specifying the port type and number.
<P> Printer Control Menu: To move to the printer control menu,
use the <P> key. You will see the menu shown below. Use the cur-
sor keys to move to the desired action. Use the <Return> key to
select an action. You will be asked to verify that you want to
send this sequence to the printer. Answer with a <Y> for yes, or
an <N> for no. If the printer is off, not selected, out of paper,
or busy you can retry or abort this operation. Hit the <Esc> key
to return back to the main menu.

a valid disk drive, path, and wild card. (C:\fontsl\*.* for
example.) If any item is missing TSR Download will ignore the new
subdirectory information.
<Alt> - <U> Unload TSR Download: You can remove the resident
portion of Download from memory provided no other program is
loaded below it. Activate TSR Download from the command line, and
use the <Alt> - <U> key to select this option. You will be asked
if you are sure you want to remove the program. Answer with a <Y>
or <N>.
TSR DOWNLOAD TUTORIAL
This section gives a quick tutorial in how to install and use TSR
Download. To begin, move to the disk drive and subdirectory that
contains copies of the DL.EXE and DLCFG.EXE programs. (TSR
Download and its matching configuration program.) Run the con-
figuration program by typing its name as follows:
dlcfg yourfontpath 512 p 1 n
You must specify a disk drive, path, and wild card for your soft
fonts in place of the word "yourfontpath". The minimum accept-
able entry is: c:\*.*. Try and keep the wild card as specific as
possible, since this speeds up program operation. If your soft
fonts are located on disk drive D: in subdirectory \softfont and
you have many different soft font names you would enter:
d:\softfont\*.*.
The "512" in the command tells TSR Download you have 512K of free
memory. (You can modify this if you like.) The "p" and "1" tell
TSR Download to use parallel printer port 1, LPT1. The "n" tells
the program to pay attention to printer port status.
Please note: if you have already loaded a version of TSR Download
into memory you can not proceed with the next step of this
tutorial until that version of the program is removed from memory
or your system is rebooted.
11
Load TSR Download into memory by typing the program name:
dl <Return>
Now activate the program by holding down all the keys that make
up the hot-key. To do this press <Ctrl><Alt><D>. A small blue
window will appear on your screen, (or a bordered box on a
monochrome system). A message will appear that indicates TSR
Download is looking for your soft fonts. Once the directory is
scanned for soft fonts a list of them will appear in this window.
If the message "no soft fonts found" appears your subdirectory
does not contain any soft fonts or you have incorrectly typed the
disk drive, path, and wild card entry.
The screen cursor should be highlighting the first file name
entry in the upper left corner of this small window. The bottom
line of the window will explain what this soft font is in
English. Try moving the cursor about using the arrow, <Home>,
and <End> keys. Notice the way the bottom line of the window al-
ways translates the soft font into an easy to understand display.
If you have more than 32 soft fonts in your subdirectory you can
switch this window between different pages of them by hitting the
<PgUp> and <PgDn> keys.
Suppose you want to send two of these fonts to your printer.
Move the cursor to the first font you want to send. Then hit the
<Space> or <Return> key to mark this font for later use. Now
move to the next font you want to send using the cursor keys.
Once again mark the font with either the <Space> or <Return> key.
Now that both fonts are marked hit the <D> key to download these
marked soft fonts. TSR Download will ask if you are sure you
want to continue. Make sure your printer is on and answer with a
<Y>. TSR Download will display the name of each soft font as it
is being downloaded.
Once a soft font is resident in your printer you can select it
from within TSR Download. Move the window cursor to the font
file name. Then hit the <S> select key. That font is now the
active font in your printer until the printer is reset or turned
off. Leave TSR Download by hitting the <Esc> key. Now copy a
disk directory to your printer: dir *.* >lpt1:. Notice that the
directory is printed in the soft font you selected.
Reactivate TSR Download by hitting the <Ctrl><Alt>(D) keys. If
you can't remember what commands work in the program hit <F1> or
<H> for help. A simple two page help screen will appear. Return
from the help screen to the main window by hitting <Esc>.
If you would like to know what fonts are now resident in your
printer hit the <M> memory key. The window will display the soft
fonts that have been sent to your printer and their memory re-
quirements. In addition, the memory requirements of any soft
fonts that are marked for later downloading will be displayed on
the bottom line of the window. Hit the <Esc> key to return to
the main window.
12
The printer control menu is available by hitting the <P> printer
key. You will now see a list of 16 things you can do. Use the
cursor keys to move to the action you would like to take. To
move to the "Remove soft fonts" entry hit the down arrow key two
(2) times. Then hit the <Return> key. The bottom of the window
will prompt you with an "Are you sure?" message. Enter a <Y> for
yes and all resident soft fonts in your printer will be deleted.
In addition the list of fonts displayed when you use the <M> com-
mand will also be cleared. Use the <Esc> key to return back to
the main window.
The last thing to try in this tutorial is the List command.
There is a much easier way to download a number of soft fonts all
at one time rather than marking each individual font. Make sure
you are at the main window which shows a list of all your soft
font file names. Pick out three or four fonts and mark them.
(Move the cursor to each one and hit the <Return> key.) Now hit
the <L> list key. A new screen will appear that gives you two
choices: Send a list, or Create a list. Use the cursor key to
move down to the "Create a font list" entry and hit <Return>.
The bottom line of this window will prompt you for a font list
file name. The simplest thing to do is to make up a file name
with no extension. Try naming your list file sample. If you
don't specify a disk drive and path, TSR Download automatically
uses the one from your soft font subdirectory. If you don't
specify a file name extension TSR Download adds the extension
".lst" all by itself. So you have now created a list file that
is saved in your soft font subdirectory called sample.lst.
To send all the fonts in that list to your printer, move the cur-
sor up to the "Send a list of fonts" entry. Hit the <Return>
key. TSR Download will ask for the list file name. Enter sample
followed by a <Return>. All the fonts in this list will now be
sent to your printer. They will also appear in the Memory dis-
play. Hit the <Esc> key twice to exit this menu and the TSR
Download program itself.
FONTCAT
The FONTCAT program is a unique utility that prints a complete
catalog of all the soft fonts you own. The FONTCAT program scans
your disk for soft fonts, analyzes them, and prints a simple
report in English that describes each font you own. To run
FONTCAT you simply specify the disk drive, path, and wild card to
be used to search for your soft fonts. A sample catalog is dif-
ficult to show in a limited space like this.
The catalog shows the font file name first, followed by the
typeface name. Note that FONTCAT can display the true typeface
name of any soft font, not just the standard typefaces defined by
HP. The catalog then shows the font point size and pitch.
Proportionally spaced fonts display the entry "prop." while fixed
width fonts have their pitch displayed here. The stroke weight
of the font and its style are displayed next. Font orientation,
13
the symbol set and the printer the font is designed for are then
shown. Finally, the font file size is displayed in kilo bytes.
To make a catalog of your soft fonts you only need to know the
subdirectory where they are stored. Make sure your printer is
turned on and ready, and then type:
fontcat c:\fonts\*.*
This will locate all valid soft font files on C: in subdirectory
\fonts. You can also change the printer port to any other valid
parallel or serial port, or you can redirect the catalog to a
disk file! To print the same catalog to LPT2 or COM1 type:
fontcat c:\fonts\*.* LPT2
fontcat c:\fonts\*.* COM1
Finally, to send the catalog to the disk file "catalog.txt" on
drive D: type:
fontcat c:\fonts\*.* d:\catalog.txt
TYPEFACE
TYPEFACE is a program that lets you modify a soft font's typeface
name. BitStream does not properly follow the HP convention for
naming soft fonts. So, TSR Download can not give you an English
typeface name for some fonts made by BitStream. With TYPEFACE you
can modify the names of all your BitStream fonts, and thus cor-
rect this problem.
LIMITATIONS: The program will not work across subdirectories. You
must change to the subdirectory your fonts are stored in before
using TYPEFACE. The first 25 typefaces (numbers 0 - 24) have been
defined by HP. No matter what you change their names to the
original name will still appear.
To run TYPEFACE, change to your soft font subdirectory, and give
typeface a font name or wild card plus a typeface name. For in-
stance:
typeface fontname typeface_name
where fontname is any soft font file name or wild card
and typeface_name is the name of the type face
Examples: typeface he100rpn.usp Helvetica
typeface bh*.* "Boxed Helv"
typeface gs*.us? "Gill Sans"
